Ok, so I’ve written a whole NINE recommendations. Imagine that. So, upon completing such a mammoth task, here is a very quick note on why I would start this, superficially, utterly pointless and annoyingly self-indulgent alter-blog.
As the URL suggests, this was originally going to be a sort of film review blog (more on why even this seemed necessary later), but very quickly I realised that I am far too nice and diplomatic to actually criticise a film unless it is utter tripe clearly made with something other than the art in mind (I’m thinking gross revenue as one incentive, the sort of lowest common denominator shit, into which I can’t imagine anybody gave their heart and soul), a la the Epic Movie ‘recommendation’. So all you will find here is positive movie recommendations, without the usual bad stuff included. If I enjoy a film I will try to write a positive recommendation, and perhaps you can work out from the percentage rating I give it just how much good stuff there actually was. If I give a film a 65%, chances are I think you might enjoy it but that it isn’t going to be perfect.
Now for the rather fair accusation that there is literally no need for me to start this blog in the first place. Well, I hear you. I’m sure the (embarassingly low) number of people following me are doing so more out of friendship and guilt than any real need for this weekly-or-so intrusion into their exciting lives. To answer these well-meaning critics I say I have two tenuous reasons: one, to establish and improve upon any semblance of coherence I currently hold (i.e. now I’m no longer studying, I need an outlet which will let me keep certain words in my vocabulary); and two, I’ve never really seen this kind of thing around before. Not for a minute suggesting that I’ve stumbled upon a niche, but the big movie review sites and publications will give their two cents on recent or historical releases, and this will generally be a balanced assessment of positive and negative aspects to a film, and a subsequent rating. Well, frankly, I’m a lover of film and not a student of film. I personally would much rather have film recommendations rather than cold assessment, and I can work out the intricacies of flourish and failings for myself.
So there you have it, this blog is as self-indulgent as it first appears, but if one person enjoys a film they otherwise wouldn’t have watched, them I am a happy bunny.
