Death Becomes Her (1992) - 68%

Robert Zemekis, known for his penchant for high concept and innovative special effects, pulls another corker out of the bag. Starring the excellent trio of Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn and Bruce Willis is Death Becomes Her, a dark “screwball” comedy exploring the morals and practicalities of eternal youth and immortality.

When forty-something actress Madeline Ashton (Streep) finds herself struggling to retain her youth and turns to the enchanting Lisle von Rhoman (Isabella Rossellini), she is given the answer to her prayers: a potion which grants eternal life. Problem solved. But with emasculated husband Dr. Ernest Melville (Willis), and bitter ex-best friend Helen Sharp (Hawn) out for revenge, she begins to discover the perils of immortality within a mortal body.

It’s a bit of silly nonsense but it has an excellent cast - including an almost unrecognisable Bruce Willis showing his versatility in a role as far from John McClane as possible - who all manage to sustain strong comic performances throughout. If you’re a Zemeckis fan from his 80’s-90’s period (Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?), then you might just like this.
